The New York Botanical Garden
The Edible Garden at the New York Botanical Garden consists of 10 exhibits meant to “[inspire us] to grow, prepare, and eat garden-fresh produce, and understand how plants provide the food and drink essential to maintaining life and enhancing wellness.”
You can visit the Edible Garden until September 13th.
This was our first visit to the NY Botantical Gardens. We first read about the Edible Garden in the July/August edition of Edible Manhattan. We weren’t quite sure what to expect…turns out there are about 7 areas of the gardens that have special exhibits featuring edible plants.
The Edible Garden touts an audio tour that features commentary from Mario Batali and Dan Barber. However, be prepared to use your cell phone to dial into an automated voice response system at each notable plant in order to hear the commentary. To be honest, I did not have the patience to dial in and work my way through the menu at every station to hear what the celebrity chefs had to say. (Side note: We took a nice walking tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright designed houses in Oak Park, IL a few years ago during which we were provided iPod Nanos with the audio tour – this was the best audio tour “technology solution” that we have experienced so far.)
That said, for us, the highlight of the edible exhibits was Martha Stewart’s Herb Garden. This beautiful and impressive garden near the Haupt Conservatory contains over 50 types of herbs, including 5 different types of basil. Walking through the Herb Garden, we were inspired to try to use more fresh herbs in our dishes.
The Rose Garden was also well worth a ride on the tram through the gardens. Summer is not the ideal time to visit the Rose Garden and we would certainly consider coming back to view the roses at the height of their bloom.
